Rich Homie Quan decided to take a small vacation and asked his manager to hook up a tattoo artist. The artist he chose was not up to par to RHQ’s standards so he reached out and asked one of his girls if they knew anybody in the Las Vegas area that could get down on him and come correct. So “Star” called up Ryan’s good friend and old manager “Vince” from Steve Soto’s Tattoo Shop Goodfellas where Ryan guest spots frequently still to this day. She asked him for a good referral in the (702). He was quick to mention Hart and Huntington’s own Ryan Jenkins who’s specializes in portraits and and black and gray realism. Vince gave Ryan a shout and a rundown. Soon after, RHQ’s manager calls and practically begs him to come through after seeing is work on www.HHTATTOO.com
Ryan was invited to tattoo RHQ at a mansion in Las Vegas. Ryan decided to have a buddy of his pick him up and help out with his gear, he decided to roll in a bit of style sitting shotgun in a 64 impala. They pulled up to this giant estate with two Rolls Royce’s, two Maybach’s, a freshly new Escalade, and a custom party bus in the driveway. Ryan stated at this time he was starting to feel a little pressure not knowing exactly what he was going to be walking into. He’s greeted at the gate by private security and let inside to unload. As they start to pull in almost immediately a few guys come out all excited and start asking his buddy to hit the switches in the car and show it off. Right around this time their camera man starts recording and they’re commenting: “See everybody, this is how RHQ’s tattoo artist rolls up! Custom car, driver, in style style with class, not just any talent can afford this lifestyle, but we only f__k with the best!” It was funny for Ryan to see how this industry worked being a big charade in a sense at all times.
Ryan walks inside only to be greeted by an entire stable of girls, models were in every corner of the house as he began to set up his equipment. He began talking with the whole entourage. It was truly a trip, first talking with girls and hearing about their lifestyle, then talking with the security and even the dude RHQ had around just to keep the coals hot on his hookah. He began hanging out and socializing a bit talking about things they had in common and how they were very much in some of the same situations. The points Ryan was explaining and is pointing out was how we were all working class people with families to support, and how we have a good opportunity to work for RHQ. It was strange to Ryan seeing how many of these people were working for free or a tip, some free just for exposure and marketing visibility.
So now its time to tattoo RHQ. He tells Ryan he wants a portrait of Pablo Escobar. He don’t even ask why before RHQ explains “This guy made 60 million a day! Yes he was evil, but he also do many many good things for his community.” Ryan is always happy to dig into a portrait of someone he has not done before, It’s definitely a strong point of his to blow someone away with his skill fist time out of the box!
As they we’re tattooing RHQ explains that he’s had a bad taste in his mouth with tattoo artists lately. He goes on to explain that his last artist kept upping his prices from 1,000 to 5,000 and higher. Then he explained how his old artist would make excuses on how some other famous football player is willing to pay more saying “Ryan, I really feel like I helped him with his career and now he barely takes my calls. Now he keeps upping the price higher and higher on me? I even sent him to tattoo my mother and he tried charging her 1,200 for a small tattoo, by then i had it! Muhfukker supposed to charge me for my momma’s tattoo. That was straight disrespect! Ryan, it’s like this… I’mma take care of you, how much would you normally charge for this tattoo?” Ryan explained that this would be $1500 at the shop. He then states “Then i’mma give you double. My old artist just full on started taking advantage of me… if you’re with me, just know i’ll take care of you. You need a plane ticket to get to me, I got you. I got your hotel, I got your ride, any car you wanna roll. I got you, man i take care of my people, but this guy turned on me”
As Ryan continues with the tattoo RHQ explains how he’s been on tour for 4 years and that this was his vacation.”Ryan, I been working hard and this is my vacation, but I have so much on my mind, I’m going to go right into the studio as soon as we are finished, you’re welcome to come along and watch the process. “Ryan finished the tattoo at about 1 am and he kept his word, he went to work right after. Ryan explained his drive was for real, a full on work-a-holic, in a good way. It was VERY inspiring. No sleep for the wicked lol. Work hard, and then work harder. Even with all the distraction around this guy was extremely focused and planning his next move. He also liked to rap… a lot…… I noticed that he listened to himself a lot… His music was playing and he kept reciting it as if he were a fan reciting their favorite song. It was like a front row seat to my own personal show.. Very exciting. I asked him why he listened to himself and he stated “Look bruh, I never write down my lyrics, I put them together in my head and then go record them.. So now i have to go back and memorize the lyrics and do some changes where needed. Also it helps me stay real hype while I’m doing shows” This all made prefect sense to Ryan, he thought it was brilliant.
Bottom line, RCQ is a full on inspiration. To this day Ryan is still amazed on his drive and his passion for his work. Ryan stated he cant compare himself, but it made him feel like he was doing the right thing, working hard, then working harder and a lot of individuals at Hart and Huntington Tattoo can relate to that way of thinking. He sees it day in and day out.
Ryan did not know what to expect going into this. He thought maybe he’d be just another rich arrogant superstar-sort of speak. He was exactly opposite in every way, extremely friendly, knowledgeable and INSPIRATIONAL to the fullest extent.
Ryan has since tattooed him again, and made another appointment to do his entire back. RHQ really likes Ryan as an individual and is amazed by his skill saying he isn’t f—ing with anyone else, he explained how Ryan’s tattoo was the best work he has on his body. At first Ryan thought he might be blowing smoke, but ya, he’s called Ryan just to check in a few times, texts go back and forth regularly getting invited everywhere he goes. Its a great start to a Artist/Client ongoing friendship.
The second time Ryan tattooed RHQ he asked if he could bring my own photographer, “I trust you bro, bring whoever you want” he said. We tattooed Edward Scissorhands on him, then went to watch him perform. That was interesting Ryan said, rolling up with him, watching him get down and being with him on stage, passing him the smoke as he rapped out to the crowd. After the show we went back to the mansion. As everyone started partying hard, Quan and I went right back to tattooing, he took a few quick fuck here and there to join the party for a bit then right back in the chair.
RHQ was real good about Instagram posts including Ryan and the shop. We were all just happy to be apart of this experience and being to showcase Ryan’s true talent on such a high profile individual in the Hip-Hop world. Since it has really opened the flood gates of appointments in this genre.
